Community Housing Organisations risk costly and time-consuming legal action unless they comply with the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act – and are able to demonstrate they are compliant.
CHOs must ensure that their policies and procedures are up to scratch and that their staff are trained to take human rights into account when dealing with tenants.
This 1.5 hour first half of the seminar will take participants through the requirements of the Charter and how to follow best practice, including some practical tips to ensure that your organisation is acting compatibly with their Charter obligations.
This CHIA Vic seminar is intended to be practical and will look at everyday procedures for tenancy workers to make sure they are complying with the Charter and how to show that this has been done.

- who is bound?
- what is a ‘public authority’?
- what does the Charter require?
- relevant human rights to consider
- case Studies/scenarios to demonstrate how the Charter can operate in a housing context

The first part of the seminar is aimed at
- New tenancy workers who need to understand the importance of Human Rights considerations.
- Experienced housing workers who need to incorporate Human Rights considerations in their tenancy management procedures
- Managers who need to incorporate Human Rights procedures into their organisation’s policies
The 1.5 hour second half of the seminar will go through the policies and procedures and model file notes developed by CHIA Vic and Moores.

- compliance process
- Notice to Vacate for damage/danger
- 120-day Notice to Vacate for no specified reason.
- how to use file notes
- the importance of documenting fairness.

The second half is aimed at tenancy management staff who have more than six months’ experience and have a good working knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), or have completed CHIA Vic or a TAFE course on the RTA.
